It took me a while to jump on the bandwagon with matcha lattes, I hated paying those lofty prices at various coffee houses. But now I have learned how to make them myself, and I can show you how to make this easy Green Tea Matcha Latte at home! Get the health benefits of drinking green tea matcha latte without spending a fortune.

As I mentioned, it took me a while to enjoy green tea matcha lattes. Not only were they expensive, whenever I went in to a coffee house, but it always seemed like they were loaded with lots of milk, sugar, and sweet syrups. Frankly, they didn’t seem that healthy for you.
I knew green tea was filled with antioxidants and other anti-inflmmatory properties but I didn’t want to consume all of the fat and sugar that came with a green tea matcha latte. So I didn’t even think about drinking a latte, and just made myself a simple cup of steeped organic green tea instead.
That is until my daughter introduced me to her homemade green tea matcha latte, and it was nothing like the kind in stores. The quality of my daughters matcha was impeccable, and I have learned that quality is important when you buy green tea matcha. The better quality, the better it maintains all of its antioxidant properties. Ideally it is best to look for 100% certified organic green tea matcha powder.
There also weren’t any sweet syrups or junky ingredients. Just quality green tea matcha, alternative milk, and a touch of sweetener. Let’s get into the recipe details.

Matcha green tea has some really incredible health properties, and you are getting a much stronger dose from drinking green tea matcha versus a regular cup of steeped green tea leaves. Matcha is harvested, seamed, dried, and then blended so you are actually consuming the entire tea leaf. Whereas with a simple cup of green tea, you are only receiving the tea leaf elements that get dissolved in the hot water.
Now don’t get me wrong, I love a good cup of green tea. In fact I drink green tea daily, much more often than matcha. But every once in a while, a rich, warm, satisfying green tea matcha latte sounds divine. And knowing I am receiving a dose of healthy good for me properties, makes it even more delicious.

- Green tea matcha supports mood and mental focus due to its high L-theanine content. L-theanine is an amino acid that helps us stay calm and focused. All green tea contains L-theanine however matcha contains much more. 5 times more, in fact, per serving than regular green tea.
There are many different ways to make matcha green tea lattes, each person has their own style. This recipe is about as simple as it gets. You don’t need an espresso machine or gadget to froth your milk. Just a mug, spoon, and you are good to go!
Finding a good quality green tea matcha powder is important, preferably one that is certified100% organic. HERE is the matcha powder I am currently using, which is ceremonial grade and 100% certified organic.
There are 3 different grades of green tea matcha:
- Culinary grade matcha is dark in color and made from older tea leaves that have had more sun. It has a slightly more bitter taste than the other grades, and is most commonly used for cooking. Culinary grade green tea matcha is also the least expensive of the three. (1)
- Premium grade matcha comes from the top leaves of the tea plant, and is suitable for daily use, either in your green tea matcha’s or for cooking. (1)
- Ceremonial grade matcha is made from the youngest of tea leaves and is much brighter and more vibrant in color. It is used for Japanese tea ceremonies and in the Buddhist temples, and it is the most expensive of the three. (1,2)
notes about the recipe:
Although I use alternative milks rather than dairy, you can use any kind of milk you prefer. My favorite alternative milk for this easy green tea matcha latte is organic soy milk because it has a slightly higher fat content than other non-dairy milks, so it gives this matcha latte a rich and creamy taste and texture.
Don’t let the higher fat content of soy scare you however, the fat in soy milk is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which is the ‘healthy’ fat that your body cannot make on its own. Other rich alternative milks are cashew and macadamia nut, delicious!

- Coffee Mug – pick your favorite and snuggle in
- Measuring teaspoon
- Small bowl to mix the green tea matcha powder
- Whisk – this is optional but I find it helps to break up any green tea matcha clumps when mixing. If you think you are going to drink green tea matcha latte’s on a regular basis, then I would consider buying one. I found my matcha set HERE.
- Small saucepan to heat up the milk. For faster prep, you can alternatively use the microwave.

- Matcha green tea powder – best if certified 100% organic
- Monkfruit, stevia, honey, or any sweetener of your choice
- Alternative milk – organic soy, flax, macadamia, cashew, almond milk etc.
- Filtered water to mix and dissolve the green tea matcha powder
optional ingredients you might want to consider:
- Cinnamon – to sprinkle on top
- Nutmeg – to sprinkle on top
- Pumpkin Spice – this one is so lovely during the fall season
easy green tea matcha latte preparation:
Measure out 1 cup of alternative milk and pour it into your saucepan. Place the saucepan on the stove and turn it to medium heat. While the milk is heating up, stir often to prevent the milk from burning.
NOTE: If you are in a hurry, you can place the milk directly into your mug and heat it in the microwave, until you’ve reached your desired temperature. Usually about 1-2 minutes.

While the milk is heating, measure 1tsp of green tea matcha powder, and stir it through the strainer into your small mixing bowl.
Add 3 tablespoons of filtered water, and whisk the green tea matcha powder until it is completely dissolved and all of the clumps are gone.
NOTE: If you are not using a strainer or whisk, then use hot water to better dissolve the matcha powder.
When the milk is heated sufficiently, pour it into your favorite mug.
Add sweetener. I use approximately 1 teaspoon of monk fruit or honey OR 3-4 drops of liquid stevia but you can sweeten your green tea matcha to your desired taste.
Pour the now liquid green tea matcha on top of your sweetened milk, and stir to combine.
If desired, dust a bit of ground cinnamon or nutmeg or pumpkin spice on top. Enjoy!

EASY Green Tea Matcha Latte
- 1 Coffee Mug Your favorite of course! 😉
- 1 Spoon for stirring
- 1 Measuring teaspoon
- 1 Small bowl To mix the Matcha.
- 1 small strainer Optional but this helps to break up any clumps from the green tea matcha powder.
- 1 Whisk Optional but this helps to break up any clumps from the green tea matcha powder.
- 1 small saucepan This is used to heat up the milk but you can also use a microwave.
- 1 tsp Green tea matcha powder Best if 100% organic.
- 3-4 drops Stevia You can also use monkfruit or honey.
- 1 cup Alternative milk I like organic soymilk, flax, or macadamia nut milk.
- 3 tbsp Filtered water To mix the matcha and break up the clumps.
- Measure out 1C of alternative milk into your saucepan, and place it on the stove on medium heat. Stirring often, allow milk to heat up to desired temperature.NOTE: If you are in a hurry, you can place the milk directly into your mug and heat in the microwave until you have reached your desired temperature. Usually about 1-2 minutes.
- While the milk is heating, measure 1tsp of green tea matcha powder, and stir it through the strainer into your small mixing bowl.
- Add 3Tb of filtered water and whisk until the matcha powder is smooth and liquid without any clumps. NOTE: If you are not using a whisk, then use hot water to better dissolve the matcha powder.
- When the milk is heated sufficiently, pour it into your mug and add sweetener.
- Pour the now liquid green tea matcha on top of your sweetened milk, and stir to combine.
- If desired, dust a bit of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, or pumpkin spice on top. Enjoy!
